Tolman received praise for her portrayal of Minnesota Police Officer Molly Solverson, with Vanity Fair noting the following "calmly and assuredly completely stole the performance". Critics' Choice Television Award, Best Supporting Actress (Movie/Miniseries) as well as Golden Globe awards were announced in recognition of her role. Tolman has also appeared in a role on The Mindy Show playing Abby Berman a romance writer. As of 2015, Tolman had a supporting role in Michael Dougherty's comedy-horror film Krampus.
